The Wa Central constituency Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), Abudu Muniru has called on the people of the Upper West region to wear red armbands to signify their displeasure on the overthrow of Dr. Hilla Limann as president of the country in the third republic.
This comment comes as the key actors in the 31st December 1981 coup which ousted former president Hilla Limann from office, prepare to commemorate the day.
Joy News’ Upper West regional correspondent, Rafiq Salam reports that the NPP official says the overthrow of Dr. Hilla Limann was a black spot in the history of the nation.
“The overthrow of Dr. Hilla Limann was bad. We have to acknowledge and forgive one another and be free. I am calling on all the people of Upper West region [to] come together and mourn. Just put on red on your hand to tell people that our brother, our father, our grandfather was overthrown on 31st December and we were not happy,” he stated.
But the Wa East Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in a rebuttal, said there is no basis for the red arm bands.
He said “when you say that Upper West people should mourn, you are only giving half of the story. The whole story is that when you hear of Upper West, that is a benefit of the revolution. When you see street lights all over, when you see light [and] when you see TV that is as a result of the revolution.”
He admits however that even though there were excesses during the revolution, it was not condoned by those at the helm of affairs at the time but insisted that the day is still significant and people must come out to celebrate it.
