A special committee has been formed to investigate all the allegations levelled against metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives, Deputy Local Government Minister, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah has disclosed to Joy News.
The establishment comes at the back of recent agitations by some irate NDC youth calling for the heads of their District Chief Executives, with the recent one being the threats by NDC activists in the Walewale constituency in the Northern Region who have threatened to cause mayhem if the DCE for the area is returned to office by force.
Mr Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, who is also the secretary to the committee mentioned other members as the party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia; its National Chairman, Dr Kwabena Adjei; and other “very, very senior” government and party officials.
He said the committee is going behind the scenes to ascertain the merits of their (demonstrators’) cases, explaining that government would not respond to the whimsical demands without verification.
“We are looking at the performance of the MMDCEs [Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives], we are looking at reports from the Regional Ministers, we are looking at reports from the security, we are sending our own teams to do verification…”
Mr Afriyie-Ankrah urged the agitated members to exercise patience, saying governance is a process, thus reiterating the fact that government cannot just sack appointees base on mere demonstration. But assured that those that genuine cases have been made against would be sacked.
“Their concerns have been taken note of, and when government has to act, it will act timeously and in the larger interest of the people.”
The Deputy Local Government Minister warned party members to act within the confines of the law because those who breach the law would be dealt with by the security agencies.
