Assistant Coach of the Black Stars, Kwasi Appiah has told Joy Sports Ghana has the right team to succeed at next month’s African Nations Championship in Sudan.
The Local Black Stars team of 23 players are in Kenya preparing for the CHAN tournament which will bring together 16 of the continent’s finest soccer nations.
Ghana, runners up in the maiden edition will face strong competition from Group B opponents South Africa, Zimbabwe and Niger.
Kwasi Appiah who assisted Head Coach Milovan Rajevac at the CHAN in 2009, says motivation will be key to their success.
He said before the team left for the last tournament, not many gave them a dog’s chance but the team surprised many with their performance.
Coach Appiah said he had confidence in the players assembled by the coach of the side, Herbert Addo.
Black Stars midfielder Rahim Ayew who was a member of the 2009 local Black Stars squad said the new 16 team format of the CHAN will make it a bigger challenge for the team.
“Now the teams are 16, it is not going to be like you playing after the group stages, you go straight to the finals. Now you have quarter-finals to play before the semi-finals so it is really going to be very difficult this time round,” he said.
Rahim however expects the team to perform creditably.
He expressed confidence in Coach Herbert Addo as well as the players' to better their last performance.
