The cholera epidemic just won’t abate yet. The current outbreak has been the source of grave concern for health authorities and claimed many lives after it was first announced in Accra some two months ago.Cases reported at various health facilities keep rising by the day and authorities are worried people are not heeding to advice about how to avoid it.At the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital here in Accra 18 patients have died out of the 754 reported cases from January to March this year.A report just released by the hospital shows males and those aged between 15 and 39 are the most affected.The Head of Public Health at the hospital, Dr. Philip Amoo tells Joy News the report cites rice and waakye vendors and sachet water amongst the main sources of infection for patients.“Nearly 70 per cent of all people reporting with cholera have been eating outside home…and it is telling us that our food venders have to be watched carefully,” he statedHe said measures were being put in place to conduct tests on selected sachet water products.Dr Amoo also noted that the preponderance of reported cholera cases have been males which he said is an indication that males are not particularly careful about what they eat.Source: Joy News/Ghana
