The Accra Metropolitan Assembly is working with the Ghana Heath Service to prevent the continuous spread of the cholera epidemic.
The current outbreak has been blamed largely on the unwholesome nature of food sold on the streets and so the assembly says it will ensure strict enforcement of its by-laws prohibiting the sale of food without a license.
It has vowed to prosecute food vendors who have not complied with food safety regulations.
Director of Metro Public Health Dr. Simpson Boateng told Joy News the assembly hopes to screen all 65,000 food vendors reported to be operating in Accra alone by the end of the year.
He said all food must have permits which can only be obtained after they have undergone medical screening to ensure the conditions they operate will not be hazardous to consumers.
Dr Boateng said metro health officers of the assembly had already started assessing food joints to see if they meet the requirement and maintained those who operations condition fall short of the regulations will be prosecuted.
