A 19-year-old unemployed, Ernest Duodu who stole a mobile phone and attempted to escape from lawful custody has been sentenced to five years imprisonment in hard labour by the Asamankese Circuit court.
He pleaded guilty.
Police Detective Chief Inspector Xystus Okorley, prosecuting told the court, presided over by Kofi Akrowiah that on June 13, Duodu stole the Siemens camera mobile phone belonging to Daniel Adamu at Adarkwa Ntunkum near Suhum and after his arrest on June 19, escaped at the Suhum Police station but was re-arrested.
Chief Inspector Okorley explained that on June 13, the convict went to the drinking spot of the complainant and bought 1,000 cedis worth of drinks.
After drinking, he relaxed at the bar for some minutes and later left for his house nearby forgetting his phone on the counter.
While returning to the bar later, Adamu met Duodu leaving the place and on entering the bar discovered that the phone he had left on the counter had disappeared.
He therefore followed Duodu to his house and confronted him but he denied knowledge of the phone.
Some of the inhabitants of the village reported seeing Duodu with the phone and a report was made to the police.
On June 19, Duodu was arrested and while at the police station, he managed to escape but was re-arrested the next day by the inhabitants of the area who handed him over to the police.
