The Deputy Minister of Health, Honorable Robert Joseph Mettle Nunoo has urged all health institutions, media houses, and individuals to help campaign for better sanitation and hygienic environment towards a healthier nation. The deputy Minister lamented that, washing of hands with soap before meals and after visiting the toilet has been taken for granted resulting in the increase in cholera cases across the country.Figures from the Ghana Health Service indicate that as at the end of March, over 4000 cases of cholera had been reported in four regions out of which seventy (70) people died.Mr. Rojo Mettle-Nunoo who made this call at the Unilever Health Summit held Wednesday at Alisa Hotel in Accra, said for the past few months when the nation was making some progress on preventive health, there has sadly been a retrogression as a result of the cholera outbreak.According to him, eating outside is becoming a lifestyle for many in the country and poor handling of food and unhygienic conditions under which food is sold have consistently been a worry to health authorities. With the cholera epidemic still raging in the country, it has become necessary for citizens to continuously stress preventive health and hygienic measures as a way of curbing the spread, he noted.
Mr. Mettle-Nunoo said, the Unilever National Health Summit is a platform for all health institutions, members of the media and individuals to collectively ensure that Ghana creates a healthy environment for its people as "a healthy people is the nation’s best assets."He indicated that everyone has a lot to do in the area of environmental sanitation to support the course.
