The Police Administration has appointed an Assistant Commissioner of Police, (ACP) George Tuffour, as the new Commander of the Northern Region Police Command.
ACP Tuffuor, until his appointment, was the Deputy Upper East Regional Police Commander.
He succeeds Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Roy Amuni, who retired from active Service on Wednesday, after attaining the compulsory retiring age in the Ghana Police Service.
DCOP Amuni officially handed over the Command Baton to ACP Tuffour at a ceremony at the forecourt of the Regional Police Command in Tamale on Wednesday.
The ceremony, which was also used to “pull-out” DCOP Amuni from active service, was attended by members of the Regional Security Council, including the Regional Minister and his Deputy and as heads of other security agencies in the region.
In his acceptance speech, ACP Tuffour appealed to all stakeholders to offer him the needed support to discharge his duties effectively, saying: “policing is a shared responsibility of both, the police and the citizenry”.
“With peace and security, we can all achieve our potential and bring about the needed development in the region,” he said.
“With your support, we will do all we can to ensure that peace is maintained in the region for prosperity to be in its trail”.
ACP Tuffour commended his predecessor for his sterling efforts, which had ensured peace and security in the region, and the country as a whole.
DCOP Amuni, who is retiring after 39 years, advised police personnel, especially the young ones, not to relent in their efforts but continue to discharge their duties professionally without fear or favour even in the face of challenges.
He urged them to let discipline be their guiding principle, saying: “Always endeavour to win the respect and goodwill of the public, without whose support, you will not find things easy.”
He advised personnel to take advantage of the available educational opportunities to upgrade their knowledge to ensure effective policing.
Mr Paul Tawiah Quaye, Inspector General of Police (IGP), in a message delivered on his behalf by DCOP Robert Ayalingo, Brong Ahafo Regional Police Commander, expressed gratitude to DCOP Amuni for his dedication and commitment to duty.
Mr Moses Bukari Mabengba, Northern Regional Minister, described DCOP Amuni as a perfect gentleman, who had been of tremendous help to the security of the region.
He expressed hope that the new Regional Commander would emulate him.
