Thirteen persons are said to have sustained serious injuries following two explosions at a steel manufacturing company in Tema.
Some of the injured person are said to be in critical condition.
Management of Western Steel have declined comment on the explosion but the General Secretary of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Mr Abraham Koomson, confirmed the incident to Joy News.
He said it was unfortunate that management of the company were unwilling to explain what might have caused the explosions.
He is even more disturbed that even though the first explosion occurred Thursday, - with the second happening Friday - the authorities had failed to report the incidents to the police or organized Labour.
According to him, the explosions raise serious concerns about safety in the country’s industries.
Mr Koomson said information available to him indicates that two of the victims had their genitals completely severed and were currently at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital while the remaining 11 are receiving treatment at the Narh-Bita Hospital in Tema.
He suspects the furnace of the steel company must have malfunctioned causing the explosions.
Mr Koomson lays blame on the Factory Inspectorate Division of the Ministry of Employment, accusing them of dereliction of duty.
While the Division has a mandate to inspect industry practices and ensure that they conform to safety requirements and standards, the division, Mr Koomson noted had shirked its responsibility, endangering the lives of factory workers in the country.
