The Chairman of the National Commission for Civic Education is challenging the popular notion by pundits and observers that the country is a democratic one.
According to Larry Bimi though there is a semblance of a democratic state, practices such as corruption, tribalism continue to erode gains of a real democratic state.
“There is a semblance of the rule of law in the country and some adherence to some human rights. Parliament is somewhat functioning and the judiciary is pulling on. Institutions of State appear to be functioning, civil society is haping on and occasionally struggling to be heard.
“Political parties are barely existing; the media, both print and the electronic, are shouting in their new found field.
“These are what pundits and observers have seen and concluded that Ghana is a democratic country.
“At best Ghana can be described as a virtual democratic country. We are not yet democratic,” he said.
