The former chief of Akyem Kusi, near Kade in the Kwaebibirem District of the Eastern Region, Nana Nketiah Tenadu II, has drowned in the Birim River during a fishing expedition. The late Nana Tenadu, 72, who abdicated about five years ago, was allegedly inspecting his fish traps (adwokuo) in the river on July 11, this year when he got drowned. Briefing the Daily Graphic at Akwatia on Sunday, the Akwatia District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Desmond O. Boampong, said Nana Tenadu had two wives, one of who was staying at Kusi and the other at Kade. He stated that last Tuesday night Nana Tenadu had gone to sleep with the one at Kade. According to DSP Boampong, after waiting for a long time without her husband returning to Kusi, the wife at Kusi became apprehensive, since that was unusual of him. Consequently, she checked from her rival at Kade about the whereabouts of their husband, whereupon she was told that the ex-chief had left for Kusi in the morning. He stated that the woman then informed Nana Tenadu's relatives, who combed the whole area for him and found his pair of sandals by the river bank where he had set his traps. The District Police Commander said the current chief of Kusi, Nana Akesse Appiah III, organised a team of divers from Kusi and accompanied them to the riverside where some rituals were performed, after which the divers made a thorough search and retrieved the corpse. DSP Boampong said when Nana Tenadu's body was thoroughly examined, fresh cuts were found on the forehead, with blood oozing from the nose and mouth. A number of people in the area attributed Nana Tenadu's death to his disregard for Awukudae (Sacred Wednesday) by going for fishing on that day, which was a taboo period for fishing.
