The Centre for Policy Analysis has asked the Bank of Ghana and the public to be vigilant as people attempt to circulate fake versions of the new Ghana cedis in the country.
Last week officials of the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) and the police at Aflao arrested two Nigerians for possessing fake new one Ghana cedis notes. They had in their possession 11 pieces of the one Ghana Cedis denominations.
The Executive Director for CEPA, Dr. Joe Abbey warned that higher denominations of the new Ghana Cedi notes risk being faked as well.
“First thing is to make sure that we all join in giving air to the security features. Normally, people like to go up the scale because they want to get as much as possible…so everybody must be extra careful when people offer them higher denominations,” he said.
The Bank of Ghana said there are security features to help people identify genuine notes from the fake ones.
Most people Joy News spoke to were able to identify at least one of the security features of the genuine new Ghana cedi notes.
