An 80-year-old woman accused of witchcraft has is seeking justice from the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice in Yendi.
Madam Ama Deborah, a mother of 6 and a resident of Bakpaba, a village near Yendi was accused of killing two boys in a motor accident four months ago but she has rejected the accusations.
The two boys, also residents of Bakpaba, were riding their motor bike from Yendi to the village when they crashed with a vehicle at a village called Lepusi in the Yendi-Bimbilla road. They died instantly.
According to Madam Ama, the wrongful accusations started last month when her son was attacked by the father of one of the victims, one Mr Yahaya, a former assemblyman in the area.
She said the former assemblyman further threatened to shoot her son to avenge the death of his son but in his rage he misfired injuring his figure in the process.
She said, Mr Yahaya subsequently told the whole village that she (Ama) is responsible for the death of his son and accused her of witchcraft.
The case was then taken to the chief palace where Mr Yahaya denied ever wanting to harm or kill her son, saying he shot the gun to show his gratitude upon a gift he received.
Madam Ama said, the following day the wife of Yahaya, went to the chief palace and again accused her of possessing and practicing witchcraft and causing her son’s death.
The chief of the village then ordered that the accused be taken to a priest to prove her innocence but she objected to the proposal arguing she is a staunch Christian and her religion forbids that.
She said, the Chief then threatened that she will be banished from the village if she did not oblige.
The accused therefore petitioned the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice to intervene and give her justice.
The Director of CHRAJ in Yendi, Mr Abass Yakubu told journalists, the Mr Yahaya and his wife and the chief in the area have been invited for question.
Mr Yakubu promised the Commission will pursue the case to its logical conclusion to ensure that, Ama Deborah secures justice, saying that, her accusers will face the full rigors of the law.
He therefore urged women who find themselves in a similar situation or are abused by others to seek the commission’s help for redressed.
