The security agencies have intercepted two vehicles carrying more than 200 bags of fertiliser worth GH¢6,000, being smuggled to neighbouring Togo through an unauthorised route near the Bempilla River in the Garu-Tempane District.
The arrest was done at about 2300 hours just four kilometres away from Woriyanga in the Upper East Region.
Mr David Adakrugu, District Chief Executive (DCE), acted upon a tip off and alerted the security agencies to effect the action.
Drivers of the two vehicles who noticed they were being trailed absconded and so far no one has claimed ownership of the goods.
Mr Adakurugu told the Ghana News Agency at Garu that smugglers in the area were taking advantage of government subsidy on fertiliser to smuggle the product.
He said the activities of the smugglers were a bother to the District and every effort would be made to arrest the culprits.
The DCE called on offending drivers and vehicle owners to refrain from the act before the law caught up with them.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Richard Appiah said the police had started investigations to arrest those behind the smuggling attempt.
