Reports reaching Myjoyonline.com indicate that the vehicle of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Yaw Owusu Obimpeh was attacked by gunmen on Thursday night.
The unknown assailants reportedly opened fire at the vehicle near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi shattering his windscreen.
Though it was not immediately confirmed if Mr Obimpeh, who was in the vehicle, was hurt in the attack, the incident has been reported at the KNUST Police Station.
The motive for the attack was not known, but it would be recalled that early June this year, Mr Owusu Obimpeh reported to the police in the Ashanti Region on purported death threats on his life through anonymous mobile phone text messages.
The police have since commenced investigations into that.
Even though Mr Owusu said he would not be intimidated or frightened by the threats adding that “this could only come from cowards”, the GNA reported that he also refrained from speculating why anybody or group within or outside the NDC might want to harm him.
Later in an interview with Adom FM, Mr Obimpeh, who could not attend this year’s June 4 uprising celebration in Kumasi, blamed his failure to show up on death threats he received three days to that event, asking him to stay away – the event was dominated by loyalist of the party’s founder, former President Jerry John Rawlings.
Mr Yaw Owusu Obimpeh had openly declared his support for President Mills’ reelection.
But it is also not clear if the attack has anything to do with the rivalry leading to the NDC’s national delegates’ congress scheduled from July 8 to 10 in Sunyani to elect the party’s presidential candidate for the 2012 elections, keenly been contested between former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings and President John Evans Atta Mills.
