A 23-year-old galamsey operator has died gunshot wounds he sustained on an Anglo-gold Ashanti concession in Obuasi.
He died at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi on Sunday afternoon.
The man, named locally as Kwame Eric, is said to have sustained gunshot wounds on his back when a private security officer opened fire on a group of galamsey operators.
The Executive Director of Wassa Communities Affected by Mining, Daniel Owusu-Koranteng told Joy News Anglo-Gold should be held accountable for incident leading to the death of Eric.
“It is part of a system that AngloGold has developed,” he alleged.
According to Mr Owusu-Koranteng, a report by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice had catalogued a litany of human rights abuses “and AngloGold has been clearly [noted] as one of the companies that are very guilty of such offences.”
He claimed abusing the rights of people had become part of the organizational culture of the mining firm.
He said murder had been committed and AngloGold Ashanti must be held accountable.
The company has expressed its condolence to the bereaved family but assured it is fully backing police investigation into the incident.
