The English Premier League (EPL) trophy has arrived in Ghana on the first leg of a historic African tour that includes stops in Lagos, Nigeria and Nairobi in Kenya.
The EPL trophy tour will afford football fans in Africa a unique and perhaps once in a lifetime opportunity to see the magnificent giant silver and gold cup at close quarters.
The Barclays Bank sponsored trophy which stands at two feet five inches and twenty four inches wide weighs an impressive four stone.
It was crafted in 2004 when Barclays became title sponsor of the FA Premier League. The trophy Rand arrived in the Ghanaian capital Accra on Saturday night under tight security and taken to a secret location.
The trophy tour is a partnership between Barclays Bank, DSTV Mobile, Multichoice and the EPL which also aims at rewarding African fans for their passionate and loyal patronage of the EPL.
The coalition of partners on Sunday paid a courtesy call on His Excellency John Dramani Mahama -Vice President of Ghana at the Castle and officially presented the trophy to him.
An ardent Manchester United supporter, the Vice President joked that he was just having a feel of the trophy before it returns to Manchester where he is confident another title would go this season.
The official presentation of the trophy to the Vice President was jointly made by Cecil Sunkwa Mills the general manager of Multichoice Ghana and the board chairman of Barclays Bank Ghana Ltd Dr. Charles Mensah.
An autographed jersey by Manchester United goalkeeping legend Gary Bailey was also presented to the Vice President who said that the excellent branding and sense of belonging the EPL brings to fans must be replicated in Ghana.
Also in attendance were Supersport Senior Marketing Manager Peter Luyanda, and senior management of Barclays Bank and DSTV.
Football fans are sure to be delighted when they see two legends – Gary Bailey and Samuel Osei Kuffour. Bailey is a regular face on Supersport who played over 373 matches for Manchester United, winning 2 FA Cups.
Kuffour is an U-17 World Cup winner, an Olympic bronze soccer medalist, European Champions League and German Bundesliga title recipient with Bayern Munich in a career that spanned a decade.
According to the Multichoice Ghana manager, the EPL trophy viewing will commence on Monday after a press conference at the National Theatre from 9am.
