Seven people lost their lives in three separate accidents in the Ashanti and Western regions at the weekend. In the first accident, three passengers [two males and a female] died on the spot when a Benz 207 bus on which they were travelling collided with a Metro Mass Transit bus between Kwapia and Akrokeri Junction in the Obuasi municipality earlier on Sunday. In the second accident, three fishermen drowned at sea off the coast of Half Assini and Agyeza in the Jomoro District in the Western Region when their canoe, powered by an outboard motor, capsized as a result of high tides. In the third incident, a student got drowned when a canoe which he was using to cross the Tano River capsized mid-stream. From Kamasi, George Ernest Asare reported that the road accident occurred when the driver of the Benz 207 bus, with registration number AS 7651 Y, which was heading towards Kumasi frin Tarkwa in the Western Region, collided with the Metro Mass Transit bus with registration number AW 463 -09 around 7:30a.m. on Sunday. The bodies of the dead, including the driver of the Benz 207 bus, whose identities were yet to be established, have been deposited at the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital for autopsy and identification. The Obuasi Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Iddrisu Tanko Yusif, who briefed the Daily Graphic, said initial investigations revealed that the accident occurred when the driver of the Benz 207 bus attempted to overtake a vehicle ahead and in the process took the lane of the oncoming Metro Mass bus. He said the driver of the Metro Mass Transit bus who might have seen the danger ahead, made frantic efforts to save the situation, but could not avoid grazing the side of the Benz 207 bus, killing the driver and two other passengers on the spot. He said the impact of the collision caused multiple injuries to many passengers on the Benz 207 bus who were rushed to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital in Obuasi and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for emergency medical care. In the case of those who drowned in the sea, about 11 fishermen in two separate canoes were said to have encountered high tide and strong winds which led to the capsizing of their canoes, reports, Moses Dotsey Aklorbotu from Sekondi. In their attempt to swim ashore, Kojo Boye 34; Namly Ndah, 28, and Papa Maama, 36, got drowned. The police said the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the Government Hospital at Half-Assini.
