About 50 passengers, mainly traders aboard a pontoon on the Volta Lake from Kete-Krachi to Ekpedzi in the Volta region are feared dead after it capsized at a village called Kpevi, near Krachi.
Eyewitness reports say only 20 of the about 70 passengers on board the ferry have been rescued while about eight bodies have so far been retrieved from the Lake.
Many are believed to be trapped under the vessel.
An eyewitness, Lumovi Kojo told Asempa News on Wednesday that five bodies were immediately retrieved when the accident occurred on Tuesday night, while four others were also retrieved on Wednesday morning.
He said the boat loaded at around 11am Tuesday, adding that around 6pm, they heard the pontoon had capsized.
Lumovi Kojo, who claims his sister and her children as well as his nephew may have died in the accident, told Asempa News that residents in the village came to the rescue of the victims but managed to rescue only the 20 passengers.
