A team of heritage professionals from the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board and UNESCO cluster office in Accra, has organized a campaign on the need to create awareness to protect the integrity of natural and cultural heritage sites.
The seven-day campaign which will take place in eight communities in the Western region is to educate stakeholders on the importance of properly maintaining buffer zones; areas created to enhance protection of a site.
The team will stress on the importance of safeguarding the buffer zones of the heritage sites in the region as well as historic buildings.
Officials say this came to light after the discovery of crude oil in recent times in the region. There is therefore the need to protect the integrity of the natural and cultural heritage sites in order to enhance ownership and avoid negative effects of developmental pressures that the crude oil find are likely to provoke.
The campaign which is sponsored by UNESCO will take the team to areas like Beyin, Axim, Princesstown, Akwidaa, Butre, Sekondi Shama and Dixcove.
