The Member of Parliament for Bole/Bamboi, Hon. John Mahama has welcome MTN's takeover of telecommunications concern, Areeba, but says the National Communications Authority must do more to ensure Ghanaians get value for money.
Mr. Mahama who is also former Communications Minister and a close watcher of the telecommunications industry says MTN will bring a lot of experience into the industry, however he warns that it also has the financial muscle to swallow the other telecom service providers.
He has therefore called on the NCA to keep a close watch to ensure there were no unfair trade practices.
John Mahama was speaking to Joy News following the launch of the African telecommunications giant MTN in Ghana.
“Considering the financial muscle MTN has, looking at their operations in all the countries they have gone into, NCA would have to continue to be vigilant and monitor and make sure that the level playing field is maintained so that the smaller operators would not be swallowed up by the financial strength of MTN. we have to look out for fair trade practices, look out for anti-competition rules … but certainly they are going to be very strong in the advertising sector."
While John Mahama agreed that the NCA had improved tremendously in terms of attracting a lot more expertise (Regulation), he said they can still do better and urged the Authority to strive to give Ghanaians more.
MTN's launch on Friday was heralded by various public manifestations, including a float and musical shows in Accra.
