Omega-3 fatty acids have received a lot of press coverage lately, including a new article about how they may impair chemotherapy treatment. Before you write off omega-3 fatty acids entirely, however, learn more about the benefits of the acids.
1. They could make you happier! If you’re one of the numerous people who are affected by depression, new research gives more credibility to the idea that omega-3 fatty acids may alleviate some of your depression-related symptoms.
2. They have an effect on prostate cancer. The jury is still out on exactly how, however. While one press release declared that men who ate omega-3 fatty acid had two-and-a-half times the risk of developing serious prostate cancer, a second study found that fish consumption helps to slow the spread of prostate cancer. Looks like we’ll have to wait for more firm conclusions.
3. They are heart healthy. While omega-3 fatty acids may not help heart attack victims recover as much as researchers have hoped, they do help lower your risk of heart disease, which may help you to avoid having a heart attack in the first place.
4. They don’t increase your risk of diabetes. Although previous research suggested that fish could increase type-2 diabetes, recent research has contradicted the older findings. In fact, the results showed that those who ate the most fish actually had a lower risk of developing diabetes than non-seafood eaters.
5. They are found in several forms. If you’re not into eating fish, you can also find omega-3 fatty acids in certain plant-based products, as well as in supplement form.
