A drunk-driver, whose truck ran into a car and killed its occupant instantly, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment by the Ashaiman Circuit Court. Emmanuel Quarshie, who was convicted on his own plea, told the court: “I drank only two tots of Alomo Bitters the previous evening before supper, and did not brush my teeth the following morning before going to work. That is the reason for recording as high as 2.1 per. cent on the alco-meter.” Quarshie will in addition to the sentence, pay a fine of GH¢1,800 or in default serve another two years in prison. The presiding judge, Mr Seyram Tsatsu Yao Azumah, in passing judgment, said he hoped the conviction would deter other drivers from engaging in drunk driving. Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Prosper Yao Aheto told the court that the accused who works with Edmac Company Limited appeared drunk while driving from Tema towards Afienya, on September 13. On reaching a spot near EMEF’s police station at Mataheko, he lost control of the steering wheel and the vehicle ran over a VW Saloon Car, coming from the opposite direction killing its driver, Kpovi Ambrose, 27 on the spot. The prosecutor said Mr. Kpovi had stopped noticing the dangerous manner in which Quarshie was driving. The truck ran into a broken-down water tanker, belonging to Max-Kwei Company and an adjoining kiosk, causing extensive damage to them. Prosecution said Quarshie escaped unhurt. When the Police arrived at the scene and tested Quarshie’s breath with the alca-meter, it read 2.1 per cent instead of the minimum 0.08 per cent.
