A group in La insists President John Kufuor must duly acknowledge and pay homage to the Chief of La before undertaking a learning project on the campus of the University of Ghana.
The ex-president will on Tuesday break the ground for the multi-million dollar John Agyekum Kufuor Centre for Leadership, Governance and Development project before proceeding to the Ashanti Region to undertake a similar project at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Dignitaries, including the former President of the Republic of Germany, Horst Kohler, former South African President, Thabo Mbeki and the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan are expected to grace the occasion.
The dignitaries are expected to pay a courtesy call on the Asantehene Otumfuor Osei Tutu II on Wednesday.
But the La Citizens Network is unhappy that ex-president Kufuor in undertaking the project in the Ashanti Region has found it reasonable to pay a courtesy call on the Asantehene and accord him the due respect and recognition he deserves but failed in acknowledging the La chief.
At a press conference in Accra on Monday the spokesperson of the group, Ni Yemo Yemofio maintained Mr. Kufuor will be disrespecting the La tradition and custom if he fails to acknowledge the La chief.
He said “Nii La is the custodian of the Legon lands so if somebody is coming to do something over there they should involve traditional people of La.”
Even though he lauded the project, he stated it must not be at the expense of the traditions and customs of the La people.
“We embrace the project at Legon but we are saying the guest should also pay a courtesy call on our land.
“…We are also telling the ex-president that he should also pay a courtesy call on Nii La so that we can also request for other things for our community.”
But the spokesperson of the ex-president, Frank Agyekum dismissed assertions that the ex-president failed to acknowledge the Ga people.
He explained the ex-president is faced with a genuine difficulty as to which Ga mantse to call on when the dignitaries arrive in Ghana.
Three people are claiming to be the rightful heirs to the Ga throne and have at different occasions been sworn into office by different king makers.
The National House of Chiefs is yet to adjudicate on who is the rightful person to be crowned the Ga Chief.
Frank Agyakum told Joy News they had to cancel, at the last hour a courtesy on the Ga Chief in order not to deepen the animosity already pervading the Ga state.
He also stated the ex-president’s office is yet to receive any formal petition from the La group.
