About 3.6 tonnes of Indian hemp worth GH¢8,000 were destroyed by the police at the Bundase Military Camp in Accra on Wednesday. The stuff, which were exhibits from accused persons and suspects, were destroyed on the orders of the court in the presence of officials of Narcotics Control Board, Judiciary, Environmental Protection Agency, Police Narcotics Unit and other intelligent agencies. Briefing newsmen later, the Deputy Director of Operations of the Criminal Investigative Department (CID), Superintendent Faakye Kumi, said the consignments were part of exhibits since the early 1990's. “Some came in during operations such as swoops organised by the police while others were seized without the suspects,” he added. Supt Kumi said it was necessary to clear such exhibits to create space, hence an appeal to the court for the destruction of those exhibits. He said the action would not affect cases at the court because other documents were available to prosecute the cases and also to arrest the suspects. Supt Kumi said police operations including swoops, had been yielding the desired results at preventing crime in the society. The police, he said, also “invaded” some farms to destroy Indian hemp being cultivated. Supt. Kumi advised the public, especially the youth, to desist from the use of narcotic drugs, which could endanger their health.
