A total of l66 drivers have been arrested by personnel of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) for jumping red lights, but 41 of them have been put before court and fined a total of GH¢14,240.
The drivers were said to have jumped the lights at the Independence Avenue, Immigration road and Kwame Nkrumah Circle, in Accra since July, this year.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Alexander Kweku Obeng, the Officer in charge of Education, Research and Training at the MTTU, who disclosed this to the Ghanaian Times in Accra on Wednesday, said the increase in such a negative practice was unacceptable and therefore needed to be addressed.
According to ASP Obeng, Legislative Instrument 952 of 1974, states that “any driver on urban road should stop when the red traffic lights are on”.
ASP Obeng noted that road users, especially motor riders did not regard road signs and as such drive through, even when the red lights are on, and this, in most cases result in accidents leading to loss of lives and destruction of property.
He said a team had been constituted by the unit to check drivers from jumping red lights, adding that the group had been equipped with cameras, laptops, communication gadgets and other tracking devices to arrest drivers.
He said most of the drivers arrested were literates who are expected to know the road traffic regulations.
ASP Obeng asked drivers to desist from such negative practices and abide by the road traffic regulations, warning that “Any person found culpable of the offence will be prosecuted.”
