The Chief of Tema, Nii Adjei Kraku II has appealed to corporate bodies in Tema and its environs to help save the Tema General Hospital from further deterioration. He said the current condition of the hospital does not speak well of a health centre located in an industrial and a harbour city. Nii Adjei Kraku II made this appeal at a get-together at his palace to mark the end of this year’s Homowo. Homowo is a yearly harvest festival celebrated by the Ga people in the Greater Accra region. His passionate appeal comes in the wake of calls by some residents for the government to salvage the already deteriorated condition of the hospital. The worry of these residents is that if the current situation is experienced in other hospitals, Ghana might not meet the Millennium Development Goal 5 target, which seeks to ensure better health and reduce mortality at birth. He added that the hospital does not only serve residents of Tema but surrounding towns as well, therefore there is the need to attend to it immediately. Tema General Hospital has been making headlines in the media recently due to some challenges it is facing. The challenges include a broken down mortuary, inadequate hospital facilities, lack of medical staff and midwives among others. Nii Adjei Kraku II therefore urged all corporate bodies in the metropolis to join efforts to solve the problem at hand. He also called on them to use the occasion as a platform to seek the common interest of the metropolis. Meanwhile, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Armah Ashietey has assured Ghanaians that his ministry is working closely with the Health Ministry to ensure that the Tema General Hospital is well conditioned. He said, arrangements have been made with the Health minister, Joseph Yieleh Chireh who is currently in China, to assist on his return, as the hospital needs a total infrastructural development to curb difficulties patients and pregnant women go through at the hospital. Nii Armah Ashietey has also asked the Tema Metropolitan Assembly to revise its supplementary budget to support the restoration of the broken down morgue. The occasion was attended by representatives of corporate bodies and institutions in the metropolis.
