Vodafone employees in its New Zealand retail stores are reportedly wearing a specially designed T-Shirt that triggers a music playback in smartphones when they are pointed at the employee.
Cellular News reported that the t-shirts, worn for the next few weeks by hundreds of Vodafone retail staff to promote the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, have a built-in augmented reality experience.
“Smartphone users who download the free Vodafone Music Awards application for Android and iPhone and point their phone at the retailers' t-shirts, will see the t-shirt graphic come to life to the tune of Avalanche City's latest single ‘You and I’,” the report said.
Vodafone General Manager of Brand & Communications, Suraiya Phillimore-Smith, was quoted as saying the application was Vodafone's way of having fun with some of the latest technology.
"Today's technology is pretty incredible and we wanted to find a way of connecting our passion for Kiwi music with our love of cool innovation, while having some fun.
"We know that Android and iPhone users are going to love seeing this in action in Vodafone retail stores. Our staff are going to be flat out standing around as customers point phones at their t-shirts," she said.
Vodafone has produced 1,200 t-shirts and developed the application in conjunction with Smudge Apps in Christchurch.
