The Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association [GMA], Kwabena Opoku Adusei has rubbished calls by Acting Health Minister, Haruna Iddrisu for members of the public to report their emergency medical conditions to either the 37 Military Hospital or the Police Hospital as doctors in public health institutions continue with their nationwide strike action. Speaking via phone on Adom TV’s BADWAM program on Multi TV, Dr. Opoku Adusei said government must find a solution to the impasse in the health sector instead of telling members of the public to direct their emergency cases to the 37 Military Hospital and Police hospital. According to him, the two hospitals are not available across the country hence the acting Health Minister’s call will not resolve the agitations which prompted the doctors to strike neither will it improve the condition of the patients who are bearing the brunt of the strike action. Dr. Opoku Adusie explained that the doctors embarked on the strike action to protest against disparities in the grading system of health works on the single spine salary structure and not necessarily about their wages as government is trying to portray. He urged government to fully address the issues raised by the doctors and find a lasting solution to the strike action instead of turning the whole situation into a political one, stressing the doctors’ resolve to continue with their strike action until their demands are met. The GMA Vice President also dismissed calls by the Labour Commission for the doctors to engage in compulsory arbitration, explaining that it is no guarantee for an end to the strike action. Members of the Ghana Medical Association have been on strike for a little over week now to protest what they term as disparities in their migration on to the single spine salary structure. They have since last Friday resolved not to admit any fresh emergency cases till their concerns have been addressed.
