Districts assemblies in the Greater Accra Region have been clearing piles of garbage at various points in the capital. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly, the Ga East and Ga South Assemblies have been assessing the damage done by Wednesday’s floods. They are working with the National Disaster Management Organisation to provide support for victims. But with the refuse running through the drains, the AMA boss, Alfred Vanderpuije wants to prevent the outbreak of disease. He told Joy News he was alarmed by the appalling conditions under which food stuffs and vegetables were being sold at the Pedestrian Shopping Mall (Odona market). The AMA Metro Health Director, Dr. Simpson Boateng told Joy News the situation was worrying. He said there was real danger of a reversal to the cholera outbreak which plagued the city. “It serious in the sense that most of the houses in Accra do not have toilets and therefore the residents...defecate in open places, in drains so with the onset of the rains and the flooding that ensued, it is possible that food will be contaminated with the cholera bacteria and then the disease will recur,” he stated. The Ga East District Chief Executive, Kwao Sackey, said his outfit will work with waste collection companies to clean up affected communities. He said the citizenry must rise up to their responsibilities and stop the careless littering of the streets. Local Government Minister Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo said he had had meetings with the waste management company, Zoomlion, to redouble efforts at clearing the city of debris. He has also directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to release whatever resources that are necessary to facilitate the cleaning process. Mr Ampofo stressed the need for the public to be educated to manage their waste properly.
