Thousands of students last night gathered at a memorial service at the GB Auditorium to mourn their late colleague Abigail Opoku-Adjei, a level 200 Marketing Student who died as a result of the devastating floods that hit Accra last week Wednesday. The 25-year-old student was crushed to death by a collapsed wall in her house, after alerting family members of the rising flood waters. Father of Abigail, Mr. Opoku Adjei told the students who were mostly dressed in black and red, how devastating their daughter’s death has been to the family. He narrated how the late Abigail got to the house at about 11 pm Tuesday night and called them to begin evacuating to safety as the flood waters had started entering the rooms. Mr. Opoku Adjei said after he and his son carried all the ladies to safety, they realized Abigail was nowhere to be found which prompted him to mount a search although the water level was still rising. He had to give up at point because he was tired and the water had reached his chest, and he called on Abigail’s brother to help him out. He said after nearly two hours when the flood waters had receded, Abigail's brother then decided to go round the house to see the extent of damage only to find his sister crushed to death by a wall. “I felt her pulse and realized she was gone. It was the flood waters that stayed on our compound for over one and a half hours that caused the damage,” Mr. Opoku Adjei told the students.
