Over 40,000 people are expected to participate in this year’s breast cancer awareness walk dubbed: Walk for the Cure.

The aim of the walk is to break the myths and misconceptions which are attributed to the increase in breast cancer cases among women in the country.

Breast Care International (BCI) in collaboration with Peace and Love Hospital, is leading the effort to fight against breast cancer through awareness, prevention, treatment and research.

High profile dignitaries including President Akufo-Addo, Ministers of State, traditional rulers, students, survivors of breast cancer and identifiable groups are expected to participate in the walk to the held at the Eastern regional capital, Koforidua on Saturday, October 14, 2017.

Initiated in 2011, as the Susan G. Komen Ghana Race for the Cure, BCI Ghana Walk for the Cure is the country’s largest and most successful awareness creation event for breast cancer.

Speaking at the event, President of Breast Care International, Dr. Mrs. Beatrice Wiafe Addai said the choice of Koforidua is because of the high prevalence of the disease in the area.

She explained that, most women in the town and its environs are victims due to the lack of awareness about the curable diseases.

“We are determined to ride on the back of the October 14 Koforidua walk to affirm our long-held assertion that breast cancer is curable, highly treatable and survivable , if only detected early”.

Dr. Wiafe Addai who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Peace and Love hospitals said breast cancer had become a national concern which needed to be addressed properly through awareness creation and screening of women.

She encouraged women, especially those working in corporate organisations, to take time off their busy schedule and go for check-ups.

The breast surgeon paid glowing tribute to the over 750 survivors who have defied the odds to convince many indeed breast cancer is curable and survivable.

“Our success story, imprinted on the minds of millions around the Globe, is credited to our Survivors, Corporate Ghana, Royalty, philanthropists, the media and the general public”.

Dr. Wiafe Addai thanked government and sponsors for being a potent force in the breast cancer awareness drive.
