A former Minister of Sports Hon. O.B Amoah is asking Ghanaians to allow Coach Goran “Plavi” Stevanovic to make his own decisions.
The Head Coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars, will be announcing his squad for the African Cup of Nations on Thursday December 15, 2011 amidst the usual frenetic debate over who joins the squad and who make the final decisions.
But the former Minister believes that the decision of who gets to play in the team should not be debated because the moment you employ the services of a coach then it means you have given him that absolute right to choose whoever he wants for his team.
According to him, there have been instances where Coaches have made decisions against everybody’s wishes and it has backfired and the vice versa have also happened in certain situations.
He explained that at the 2006 Cup of Nations in Egypt, Coach Ratomir Dujkovic selected his squad and we failed woefully and he nearly lost his job but after careful deliberations he took the advice of employers and there was success at the World Cup.
Furthermore, Milovan Rajevac, he said, also stuck to his decisions and he succeeded at both the 2010 African Cup of Nations and 2010 Fifa World Cup.
The best the FA can do is to allow the Technical Directorate of the outfit to advise the coach but at the end of the day the coach’s decision should reign supreme, he remarked.
When asked who to blame if the coach is allowed to make his decisions and the team fail, he said it will be better to allow the coach to face the music himself than to suggest that his decisions were influenced by the FA.
I
n a related development, Hon. O.B Amoah, cautioned the Black Stars not to be complacent about their chances at the 2012 Cup of Nations.
According to him, some favourites have lost matches in recent times due to complacency, so we should not think that the so called heavyweights are not coming so we will be home and dry.
There is a certain Gabon who are co-hosts and have currently won the Caf U-23 Championship so we should be wary of all the teams participating, he added.
