The Inspector General of Police Paul Tawiah Quaye has held a close door meeting with officials of the Electoral Commission to review security arrangements during the first phase of the ongoing biometric registration exercise. His visit follows the numerous reports of assault and clashes between supporters of the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party or their agents. Briefing the IGP and his entourage, Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr Afari Gyan said in some of the cases, registration officials were targeted threatening the exercise at the various centers. He also cited the Ashanti region as one of the regions which recorded the highest number of incidents. “As you no doubt aware we have no official powers of arrest and if people have been arrested we cannot prosecute them. We have to rely on you to arrest and prosecute them. “There have been in some disturbing instances in the first ten days, particularly in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. So we want to know what has been done and what you plan to do so that those disturbing instances will not reoccur,” he said. In a brief remark, the Inspector General of Police assured the Commission it will beef up security to prevent recurrence of such incidents. He also called for EC’s collaboration to ensure a successful exercise. “For the police service I can say our job is cut for us. We have to concentrate on security provision for the registration and elections and we also have to ensure the necessary peaceful and congenial environment.
