The Chiefs and people of Akuse are protesting the decision of the Electoral Commission to suspend the biometric registration in the six electoral areas in Akuse-Amedeka.
They are accusing the EC of succumbing to pressure from the people of Manya Krobo, who have been resisting the EC’s decision to place Akuse under Dangme West in the Greater Accra Region.
The people of Akuse have long considered themselves part of Osudoku in the Dangme West District but Akuse has been under Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region, and following years of protest, the EC has now placed Akuse in the Greater Accra region.
Last week a front page story in the Daily Graphic quoted the EC as saying it has placed the registration in Akuse on hold.
This, according to the story, was a result of protests from the people of Manya Krobo and the people of Akuse are not happy.
They say the EC is bowing to pressure from the people of Manya Krobo. George Amanor spoke on behalf of the people of Osudoku.
“The decision of the Electoral Commission to suspend the registration exercise because the district security committee of Lower Manya Krobo district assembly has demanded is most unfair,” he said.
“…The Electoral Commission should be the first to champion the rule of law. They should ignore the private inter-meddling efforts of the Lower Manya Krobo DCE to undermine the rule of law," he added.
He urged the EC to rescind its decision to come and register residents.
Meanwhile, Joy News has learnt that some residents of Akuse who fear they will be disenfranchised are trooping to nearby registration centres in Osudoku to register in the ongoing biometric registration.
