The police administration has dissociated itself from a 2,000 cedis ransom promised by the District Police Commander for Tafo Pankrono for the arrest of a suspect said to be behind the chaos in the biometric registration exercise in the district. Superintendent Kwesi Ofori promised to financially reward any person who provides information which leads to the arrest of a thug he alleged was disrupting the biometric registration process in his district. But a statement signed by the Director General Admin COP Rose Bio Atinga said the police is not aware of any such promise of a ransom. “The Police Administration wishes to dissociate itself from the decision by the District Police Commander of Tafo Pankrono Superintendent Kwesi Ofori to put a ransom of two thousand Ghana cedis (GH¢2,000) on the head of the suspect in the Tafo registration exercise disturbances,” the statement said. “It must be noted that the police has its own ways of investigating cases of this nature and arresting such suspects. “If the officer indeed put a ransom on the head of the suspect, he did so on his own accord without seeking authorization from the police administration,” The statement further stated the police will do everything possible to ensure that all perpetrators of crimes related to the ongoing registration process will be brought to book. Bio Atinga told Joy News’ Evans Mensah “the police administration has not placed any bounty on anybody’s head and that is real fact.” She said for such a reward to be promised the administration has to be consulted because they would have to foot the bill. She stated no such consultation has been done by Superintendent Ofori, explaining if such a precedent is set, other personnel who have similar challenges will also place bounties on heads of suspects when the administration has no budget for such expenses. She could not however say if personnel who make such promises without recourse to the administration would be penalized.
