The immediate past Greater Accra region minister is contemplating legal action against the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit boss, ACP Angwubutoge Awuni. Nii Armah Ashitey is accusing Awuni of ordering policemen to assault him a biometric registration center. He also alleged the MTTU boss hurled insults at him and dared him to take him (Awuni) anywhere he so chooses. ACP Angwubutoge Awuni admitted he may have lost his cool and used inappropriate language after he was provoked with threats of dismissal by the former minister. He has since apologized. He however insisted his order for the arrest of the ex-minister was well within the confines of the law. According to him, the former minister disrupted the registration process and that was an offence. He said the police must be allowed to do their job, irrespective of the individual involved, adding that even the president is subject to the laws of the country. But Nii Armah Ashitey has denied misconducting himself. He has also denied resisting arrest or impeding the registration process. On the contrary, he said the MTTU boss ordered his boys to assault and manhandle him without provocation. He described the MTTU boss as 'dishonest', explaining that the whole world must know the facts of the case. He said he is submitting to National Security as well as the Interior Ministry a petition detailing what exactly happened to him. He is also speaking to his lawyers to consider legal action against the MTTU boss. “If I provoked him, I want the whole world to know that I provoked him,” he said. Meanwhile, a senior law lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) says the action by the former Greater Accra regional minister could undermine the governance process. Kofi Abotsi would rather the former minister took up the issue with other constitutionally mandated bodies than the Interior Ministry which he said falls under the executive arm of government.
