The Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) together with KAB Governance Consult is set to commence a 4-part project aimed at using the media to enhance transparency and credibility in this year’s elections. Phase one of the project offers voice to three governance institutions namely the Electoral Commission (EC), National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the National Media Commission (NMC) to educate electorates on important issues and also to be quizzed. “Case of the Manifesto”, the second component of the project, will provide support to registered political parties by giving them the opportunity to present their positions on issues such as education, health, food security and energy to citizens. State institutions such as the Police and the judiciary will also be given the chance to provide electorates with important information regarding elections using the “Election Platform”, a 6-month programme that will air on national television. The last phase is the creation of an “Election Relay Centre” at the Press Centre where credible and certified election results and other election-related data can be obtained by the media. The project which is sponsored by STAR-Ghana, also calls on the media to ensure accuracy, accountability and balance in their reportage during the elections. The Chairman of the Electoral Commission , Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, reminded the media of the need to give fair access to all parties and their candidates and report their activities accurately to foster healthy political competition. He also tasked the media to disseminate authentic electoral information to the electorate since widespread misunderstanding of the electoral system is an obstacle to credible elections. GJA President, Ransford Tetteh, mentioned the project was part of the Association’s modest contribution towards the success of the 2012 elections.
