Executives of the Greater Accra regional branch of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) have announced a prolonged picketing campaign to force out the commander of the Police Motor Traffic and Transportation Unit (MTTU), ACP Angwubutoge Awuni.
He has been accused of brutalising former regional minister, Nii Armah Ashittey who has already petitioned National Security and the Interior Ministry over the matter.
ACP Awuni has apologised for verbally abusing the former minister whom he claimed threatened to have him dismissed. But he has denied any wrongdoing in ordering his arrest for allegedly disrupting the biometric registration in the Korle Klottey constituency.
The NDC has called on the police administration to sack ACP Awuni.
The party’s Greater Accra Chairman of the NDC Ade Coker told JOY NEWS they will mount sustained protests to ensure their demand is met.
He argued that in a democracy they have the right to make such demands.
But a Senior Lecturer with the GIMPA Law School, Ernest Kofi Abotsi, has criticised the approach by the Accra NDC leaders as an unfortunate development.
