The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Volta Region has been adjudged the best performing region for 2011. The region scored 51.4 per cent to win the prize of 10 per cent of annual salary to all ECG workers in the region, amounting to Gh¢ 26,558.95 and a plaque. Dr Smart Yeboah, Customer Services Manager, at an award ceremony in Ho on Friday, commended the region for winning the feat for first time since the institution of the award. He said the terrain in the region, which is rugged, extensive and with many outlandish areas, made the region’s performance particularly commendable. Dr Yeboah said areas of evaluation, were revenue collection, billing, loss reduction and customer relations, among others. All ECG district offices in the region were also given plaques of recognition. Mr William Hutton-Mensah, Acting Managing Director of the ECG, said the company was giving additional thrust to its operational and commercial profile. He mentioned repair and updating of transformers and lines and overhauling customer response mechanisms among others. Mr Hutton-Mensah said raising the technical capacity of ECG to improve power quality, combined with good customer relations should enable the company to gain the goodwill of the public. He said the ECG should be seen to be responding to customer complaints promptly, repairing faults expeditiously, alongside collecting all the revenues to remain in business. Mr Hutton-Mensah expressed joy that staff of a “certain district” in the region on their own bought bulbs for dormant clients to enable them to use power to stop their meters from recording zero. Mr Hutton-Mensah, who was the immediate past General Manager of Volta ECG, received a plaque in recognition of his leadership qualities, which enabled the region to be on top. Mr Delali Oklu, Acting Volta Regional General Manager of the ECG, said every staff, regardless of status, was part of the effort that won the region the award, and promised that the region would improve on its operations to keep the lead.
