The price of wheat flour has gone up following upward adjustment in the cost of the commodity on the international market by 35 percent. The price hike was necessitated by increased demand for the commodity for the production of bio-diesel.
As a result, flour milling companies have increased prices of various brands of wheat products.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Agro-Food Company Limited (GAFCO), Mrs Adjoa Sey, confirmed the increases in an interview and explained that the company had increased its products by ¢42,000 across board.
She said the price of a 50-kilogramme bag of wheat was being sold at ¢375,000 instead of the old price of ¢333,000.
Mrs Sey said the situation was as a result of a worldwide problem and indicated that if the trend continued, it meant that the prices of the commodity and other products would be adjusted again.
She was of the view that the increase would not affect the quality of the products.
A number of traders the Daily Graphic spoke to expressed surprise at the increase in prices especially at the time when schools had just reopened.
The Director of Emma's Bakery at Community 8, Tema, Madam Emma Yarney, expressed shock at the increases because the flour mills increased their prices about four months ago.
She was of the view that the increases would trickle down to the consumers.
