The anti-armed robbery unit of the Ghana Police Service Tuesday intercepted a Nigerian registered private car, carrying fake currency notes with the face value of GH¢1,096,240.00 in GH¢20 denominations.
The Police arrested the car, an Audi caravan with registration number GH904 LND, travelling from Nigeria to Accra with the fake currency in two “Ghana Must Go” bags upon a tip off.
The Deputy Commander of the Police Anti-armed Robbery Unit at the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jerry John Boye, told the Times Tuesday that following intelligence report last Thursday that the car had entered Ghana through the Aflao border enroute Accra, the vehicle was pursued by a team of policemen to a hotel at Ada.
He said, the police gathered from an informant at the hotel that the driver said the car had developed a fault and that he was going to town to fetch for a mechanic.
ASP Boye said the police team slept at the hotel until the following day but the driver did not return to the hotel, a possibility that he realised that he was being trailed.
The driver, he said, abandoned the vehicle and its contents together with the ignition key.
ASP Boye stated that the police, therefore, drove the car containing the fake notes to the CID Headquarters as exhibits, saying his outfit was conducting further investigations into the case.
“If it becomes possible, we will seek the assistance of the International Police Organisation (INTERPOL) to have the driver arrested”.
