Dr. Raymond Atuguba, the Executive Secretary of the Constitutional Review Commission who has brought a suit against telecom giants, MTN says Ghanaians must no longer allow themselves to be taken for a ride. Dr. Atuguba is suing MTN for the wrongful disruption of telephony services and is seeking a restoration of his number and compensation for violation of his rights as well as loss of business. Speaking to Joy FM, Dr. Atuguba stated it is about time Ghanaians demand the services for which they have fully paid for rather than accepting just anything. He added that the practice where customers jump from one mobile service to the other when services are poor is a contributory factor why telecom companies are not providing quality service. “When you do that(mobile number portability), you encourage all the telecom providers to give lousy services. And then you keep hopping from one lousy service to the other until you realize that all of them are lousy, and then you remain with one lousy service.” He stated that his complaints about the poor service of the telecom giants date to 2004 when they were called Spacefon Areeba. According to Dr. Atuguba, his itemized bill was overcharged as much as over 400% above the maximum bill as they have stated. Meanwhile, MTN have explained that Dr. Atuguba’s line was disconnected after he failed or refused to honour debt accrued for the past four months. According to MTN, Dr. Atuguba’s line was disconnected one-way, that is to prevent him from making calls. But Dr. Atuguba explained although his line was disconnected one-way, moments later it was disabled two-way meaning he could not receive text messages and neither were calls able to come through. Whereas Dr. Atuguba explains that the debt that accrued when he was on roaming, MTN maintains that out of the total bill of GH¢4,302.91, only GH¢1,930 was subject of roaming dispute. In respect to MTN violating his rights, Dr. Atuguba explained that in the event of an emergency situation, he would not have been able to use his line because MTN has wrongfully disconnected it.
