The relevance of the Republic Day celebration has been called into question with suggestions that it should be scrapped.
Advocating an end to the marking of the Republic Day holiday, Executive director of the Danquah Institute Gabby Asare Otchere Darko argues that the day has lost its relevance and contributes to loss of productivity.
Ghana became a republican state in 1960 transferring the position of head of state from the queen of England to the Republican President.
Despite several coups, the country has however maintained the celebrations through to the fourth republic.
And Mr. Otchere-Darko says the first republic is dead and gone.
“What is the point in celebrating a republic, the constitution of which has been abandoned by any other subsequent constitution,” he said.
He believes the 1st Republic represents all that was wrong “with our government in terms of constitutional dictatorship.”
Though a Fellow of the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kpesseh White agreed that Ghanaians have lost emotional attachment to the day, he suggested Ghana must settle on either republic day or Independence Day as a holiday and not the two.
