Relatives of a man who was killed by police for alleged armed robbery in Kumasi over the week-end, are set on a protracted tussle with police over the status of the deceased.
Kweku Asante was shot dead by a police patrol team which engaged suspected criminals in a shoot-out at Sepe-Timpom on Saturday night.
His family and some youth in the town have disputed police claim their relative was an armed robber.
They are calling for the dismissal of the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Augustine Gyening, accusing him of incompetence in his handling of the incident.
Barely 24 hours after Ashanti Regional Police Command justified its action, the relatives of the victim have issued a counter-claim.
Anokye Frimpong is Assemblyman for Sepe-Timpom. He alleges Mr. Gyening had admitted at a meeting with some community leaders that the deceased and two others arrested in the swoop were not criminals.
Spokesperson of the family, Prince Anokye, also accused Mr. Gyening of displaying incompetence in handling last Saturday’s unfortunate incident.
The Police Commander however said there is evidence to prove the deceased carried a knife and machete at the time he was shot.
DCOP Gyening accused the Assemblyman of playing mischief for what he described as political advantage.
He indicated police will not be cowed into submission by any individual or group at the expense of public safety and security.
Meanwhile, some members of the community led by a woman in her 80s have invoked the spirits of seven deities on the police over the matter.
