Dr C.Y. Brempong-Yeboah, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and NEPAD has called on workers organisations to use unionised labour to foster nationalism and patriotism in the country.
He said, "let us think about Ghana first, our organisation then ourselves".
Dr Brempong-Yeboah made the call when delivering the keynote address at the inauguration of the first Professional and Managerial Staff Union (PMSU) of Ghana Mineworkers Union (GMWU) of Trades Union Congress (TUC) at Obuasi.
It is made up of senior staff of AngloGold Ashanti (Obuasi).
Dr Brempong-Yeboah said gold mining was important to the economy and even though the industry was a major foreign exchange earner Obuasi remained under-developed.
He advised organised labour against the use of militant approach to labour issues but through negotiations, discussions and the new labour law that had provided avenue to settle issues at workplaces.
Mr Kwasi Adu Amankwah, Secretary-General of TUC noted that the integration of PMSU into GMWU was a major development in the mining industry and a milestone in the history of GMWU.
He said GMWU established about 65 years ago had focused on organising junior staff.
