Junior doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have resolved to stop attending to emergencies and new patients beginning Monday, September 10, until their striking supervisors return to work.
Consultants at the hospital withdrew their services over unpaid allowances last month. The junior doctors after a meeting on Friday also decided they can no longer work unsupervised.
According to some resident doctors in an interview with Luv FM, they (doctors) are due to write their postgraduate examinations and are not currently any assistance from their supervisors.
President of the Junior Doctors Association of KATH, Dr. Lawrence Osei-Tutu told Luv FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor, their action is to get the consultants back to work.
According to Dr. Osei-Tutu, their action is not to force the hand of government into doing the bidding of the striking consultants.
He maintained that the absence of the consultants make their work difficult as well as pose some legal challenges to their practice.
He explained their strike action meant that only patients admitted prior to the strike will receive care whereas new patients and emergency cases will not be attended to.
The consultants, who number about 100 are teachers at the School of Medical Sciences at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) but also double as supervisors of junior doctors at the hospital, withdrew their consultancy services to the hospital, after their top-up allowance were unpaid for over eight months.
