Workers of the troubled Intercity STC on Wednesday took out their frustrations over unpaid salaries onto management, temporarily disrupting operations.The company is said to owe some Ghc43 million and has been in the news recently after one of its creditors, Prudential Bank gave notice to auction some property to defray a loan debt of Ghc7.3 million.The workers who say they have not been paid in the last three months were chanting and burning lorry tyres when Joy News got to the Head Office.They are not oblivious of the company’s current predicaments, but insist management could find money to pay their salaries if it wanted to.After some 30 minutes of picketing they were called into a meeting where the Managing Director bluntly told them the company was in no position to pay the salaries. He blamed the closure of the border with Cote D’Ivoire explaining to them disrupting the operations would be disastrous due to the difficulties they are already having to grapple with.The workers eventually came out of the meeting with a change of hearts but still dissatisfied. They claim Intercity STC grossed some 27 million Ghana Cedis in July and August. Though the head of Finance and Administration, Nuhu Jansbaka confirms this, he says most of the money goes into paying off old debts. He insists, despite the assurance from the MD, that the workers will be paid if the company is able to secure a loan, a practice he says has been going on for about a year now.Another meeting has been scheduled Thursday September 27, to discuss the workers’ concerns. Meanwhile, it is unclear what arrangement has been reached regarding the attempt by Prudential Bank to auction the STC head office.
