The Catholic Bishop of the Wa Diocese, Most. Rev. Dr. Paul Bemile says the Catholic Church will not impose its faith on others. This is in reaction to the directives given by the President John Dramani Mahama that Muslims in mission schools should not be under any compulsion to observe the rite and religious activities of those mission schools across the country. Dr Bemile made this known at the commissioning of Kindergarten school block at the cost of Ghc 77,871.80 meant to cater for needy, deprived and orphans of HIV/AIDS victims. The school is a donation from Fred and Elyse Maindonald, a couple based in Canada who through partnership with Dr Godfrey Bacheyie made the building of the school a reality. ‘‘Politicians are very quick in praising the Catholic Church for its performance especially in the educational sector but when it comes to cooperation the same politicians are not willing to sit down with the church and dialogue," he stated. Dr. Bemile said it is lamentable that schools founded by the Catholic church are often taken over by the government without any consultation with the church. He hinted the Catholic Church is developing a concept paper of partnership between the church and state in this regard. He said the concept of decentralization has made it increasingly impossible for the Catholic education unit to post their own teachers where their services are most wanted. The Wa Catholic diocese bishop said the basic principle of the Catholic Church is to train people in a very holistic way by ensuring discipline especially in catholic educational institutions. He debunked the idea that students in other faiths especially Muslims are being forced to go through the rituals of Catholicism, insisting that is not the situation on the ground. He said the situation called for a dialogue among all stake holders so that the historical memory of all catholic educational facilities will be maintained. The regional manager of Catholic Education Unit, Mr. Cosmos Yeleduori, said the catholic church has 92 KGs, 143 primary schools, 100 Junior High Schools, six Senior High Schools and seven vocational schools, a training college in the pipeline, including four private schools. He said lack of teachers in the Catholic educational units is a big challenge especially in some communities. The Wa Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Suleman Alhassan said the Catholic Church has bailed out the government in providing educational facilities in many deprived areas of the country especially the Upper West Region.
