Tullow Ghana Limited (TGL) has been honoured by the Prempeh College Old Students Association (Amanfo) during the annual Pearson/Osae Appreciation Lectures on August 16, 2018.
The Association recognised TGL’s support for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and the company’s sponsorship of a science laboratory block for Prempeh College.
Completed in 2017, the Prempeh College Science Laboratory Block Project has been named after the founder and former Chief Executive Officer of Tullow Oil plc, Mr. Aidan Heavey. TGL collaborated with Amanfo to sponsor the construction of the building as part of a Science Laboratories for Schools initiative under TGL’s STEM programme.
The initiative was designed to provide centres of excellence in science to secondary education institutions, in order to motivate students to pursue STEM subjects, drive innovation and guarantee the development of skills relevant to Ghana’s changing needs.
Director for External Affairs, Social Performance and Local Content, Cynthia Lumor, stated that, “Building STEM capacity from basic to tertiary education levels is aligned with Tullow’s Shared Prosperity philosophy. We believe that Ghana’s petroleum resource should be a catalyst for development, and providing support towards national developmental agenda targeted at a future founded on technology and innovation is consistent with that philosophy. TGL will continue to provide the support needed by our host country to achieve national goals.”
The citation presented to Tullow Ghana reads;
“For your immense contribution to the development of science education in Ghana under your Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programme. You have taken upon yourself to equip schools and colleges in Ghana with STEM teaching equipment to augment the efforts of government and the various interest groups in our second cycle education system to train our country’s future.
Through your programme, we have benefited from the construction of a multi-purpose science laboratory block for the students of Prempeh College which has been named the Aidan Heavey Science Laboratory Block. The Prempeh College Old Students Association is appreciative of your efforts and is proud to be associated with you.
In recognition of this forward-looking initiative and many others, the Prempeh College Old Students Association, Amanfo? presents this certificate of honour as a token of appreciation”.
Under the Science Laboratories for Schools initiative, TGL supported centres of excellence in science by collaborating with alumni association to provide select second cycle schools with refurbished infrastructure, newly constructed laboratories or equipment. Prempeh College is one of such beneficiaries.
Other beneficiaries include, Mfantsipim School, Archbishop Porter Girls School, Achimota School, Accra Academy, Half Assini Senior High School and Nkroful Senior High School.
